If you are serious about bar culture, Bar Convent (BCB) is the place to be. Founded by former bartenders in Berlin, Germany, this fair has become the leading platform for bar products and spirits within the last decade.
Accordingly, it was clear to us that we wanted to present UNDONE there first. And there was nothing better timed than Bar Convent in Brooklyn, New York City. It was quite a close call. But our UNDONE Range got finished just in time.
When we arrived at show venue though, we weren’t really pleasantly surprised. Right above our stand there was a leak from a cooling pipe. While we appreciate and support free water at a spirits convention our stand materials weren’t so appreciative of getting soaked.
Eventually, after hectic organizing and lots of phone calls, we managed to get our exhibition stand ready for the opening of the show. One of the reasons for this is Halil, the best New York stand builder you can imagine.
But we also had to rely on the services of DHL Express to get our first four UNDONE variants „No.1 Sugar Cane Type“ (This is not Rum), „No.2 Juniper Type“ (This is not Gin), „No.7 Italian Bitter Type“ (This is not Orange Bitter), and „No.8 Italian Aperitif Type“ (This is not Vermouth) into the country just in time. In order to have them at our stand ready for pouring, we had to cross the bridges to New Jersey and pick them up personally.
A moment to remember was the spray painting of our first own UNDONE bags with a view of the Statue of Liberty!
Of course, we had already had the first UNDONE variants analysed several times by professional tasters and bar experts. The Bar Convent in Brooklyn, however, offered us the opportunity to get guaranteed unfiltered feedback from one of the most progressive bar scenes in the world.
It was exciting to see how even sceptics became fans within seconds. The category of alcohol-free alternatives to spirits is still very young and not known to many. But our method to source and work with the original products for UNDONE convinced many visitors of our booth immediately.
“I didn’t even talk to the visitors about the why during the two days. Everyone immediately understood the topic of alcohol-free and UNDONE‘s approach,” summarized our CEO Mehmet Ünlü.
Unforgotten was the comment of a representative of a large spirits company after tasting our alcohol-free Negroni: “You did it. This really works.” Despite repeated insurances, he couldn’t believe that there was no alcohol in our UNDONE No.8 Italian Aperitif Type.
We were also pleased that UNDONE was part of an international premiere. In the Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse, the chemist and renowned spirits expert Jürgen Deibel explained the production methods and approaches for alcohol-free products for use in cocktails to the trade fair audience on the basis of our range.
Among other things, his talk revolved around the questions whether spirits need alcohol at all and what role alcohol really plays in cocktails. This resulted in exciting conversations and discussions, which we will certainly experience in many more places.
After Bar Convent is always right before Bar Convent. In October, we will exhibit at the BCB’s parent fair in Berlin.
